Tyler Perry Shook After Seeing OpenAI Sora Demo

This is an article I wanted to write.

If there is anyone who would be scared of AI supplanting them, it would be Tyler Perry. The producer of the hilariously mocked, A Fall from Grace, and latest project, Mea Culpa, saw a demo of Sora that changed his outlook on movie making.

I don’t knock creators lightly. I work with creators all the time. I’m now working for a creator on this rag. And to be far, I don’t knock Tyler Perry’s hustle. He knows his audience. He knows who will enjoy his movies and keep coming back for more.

However…

Tyler Perry movies will never be known for having depth. They are good watches if you want to see something on the cult level, or if you’re looking for Roger Corman set design mixed with romantical drama.

Jobs Are Going to Be Lost

Tyler Perry

I can joke and laugh about Tyler Perry’s response after seeing Sora but he had some prescient thoughts about the technology and its impact on people. Perry offered a warning that AI technology should be regulated in order to protect humanity. He was planning on building an $800 million studio expansion and paused on those plans after seeing the demo.

What is Sora?

Sora is OpenAI’s latest model. This model specializes in generating full motion, realistic videos based upon user supplied prompts. The output from Sora is very cool. The imagery isn’t animated, but is rendered very close to real life. It’s so good, it’s easy to overlook many of AI’s glitchy aspects.

I feel like everybody in the industry is running a hundred miles an hour to try and catch up, to try and put in guardrails.

Tyler Perry

I agree with Tyler Perry. Now is a time we should be really careful and proactive about putting guardrails on this new and exciting technology. Companies are rushing to integrate LLMs into every single aspect of their businesses sacrificing quality and human factors for being cheap.

If we aren’t careful, we’ll see ourselves in a dystopian future standing on the precipice of societal collapse.

About That Demo

This image was generated in DALL-E 2 using this prompt: a dystopian future standing on the precipice of societal collapse. Interesting how DALL-E depicts a clock in this image.

P.S. I know. I made up the word: romantical.
