In a show of bipartisan support, Congress grilled the CEOs of the world’s largest social networks yesterday.
We’ve been reporting on the ills of social media since El Jefe began making the rounds on Fox News Radio in 2017. It took Congress 7 years and them all complaining about how the social networks favor conservatives or liberals for them to take the real dangers social media inflicts on teens, girls specifically. Neither Democrats, nor Republicans, share a fondness for social media since they think the platforms favor the other side. In reality, the social networks only favor themselves and have no value for the users rotting their brains on them everyday.
Women and Girls Are Not Okay
Social networks are haven of abuse for children and teenagers, but girls have taken the brunt of abuse.
According to Facebook’s own data:
- 37% of Instagram users aged between 13 and 15 encountered nudity on the platform within a week.
- 24% of Instagram users aged between 13 and 15 encountered unwanted sexual advances within a week.
- 17% of Instagram users aged between 13 and 15 encountered self-harm content within a week.
Facebook’s own data.
Facebook has become a haven for incels and Kevin Samuels wannabes to both complain about and shame girls and women into believing they have to be high value women to be accepted by men, while at the same being a launching pad for scum to hurl sexually explicit DMs and harassing posts.
The fallout isn’t just in the abstract. Internet bullying on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter/X have led to real world suicides and incidents of self-harm.
The testimony lasted for four hours in a rare glimpse of bipartisan cooperation. Mark Zuckerberg and TikTok CEO Zhou Zi Chew volunteered to provide their testimony while the CEOS from Twitter/X, Discord, and Snap had to be subpoenaed to make an appearance.
Congress invited families who’ve experienced loss because of these platforms to yesterday’s testimony. The tone in the room was thick enough for Mark Zuckerberg to apologize to families who’ve experienced some form of trauma thanks to his platform.
It’s All a Joke to the Social Networks
Really, we’re too deep in now. The social networks have crafted laws behind them that immunize them from the worst hate and harassment speech on their platforms, and thanks to digital they’ve been able to value teenage users to $270.
For years, we’ve applauded nerds like Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and Jack Dorsey for being geniuses in connecting our world through the use of social networks. In reality, all of these clowns were (are?) social derelicts who couldn’t foster real world friendships with men or women. It’s no wonder the social networks are full of hate, misinformation, and flakey connections. They were envisioned by people who didn’t have the skills to build their own IRL social connections.
After all of these years watching these networks proliferate and ignoring the social red flags they’ve planted we can bask in the glow of networks made in the images of their creators. That glowing is the social fabric burning in the flames.
