Apple has been adding enhancements to its emergency features since the iPhone 14. In addition to Crash Detection, Emergency SOS, and emergency text messages, the lastest iOS features the ability to FaceTime with 911 dispatchers.

The two largest 911 support platforms, RapidSOS and Prepared will allow iPhone users to use live video when making 911 calls. This will enhance the dispatchers ability and awareness to understand an incident and assist the person in need.

From a woman’s perspective this is a solid development. Often times women’s consideration in an emergency or under duress isn’t given much consideration. In many cases that comes from law enforcement and emergency responders. The most recent case shows how Sonya Massey wasn’t taken seriously, then was considered a threat when trying to receive emergency aid.

Maybe, just maybe, video in addition to audio can lead to better outcomes when emergency responders take the call to assist people in need.

Apple’s Emergency SOS services will also be getting Fall Detection and satellite iMessage support. These features send emergency text messages using satellite communications when you’re in a remote location without cell service.

Apple has bolstered its emergency capabilities. After a year of news reporting women gone missing in remote areas, and assaulted new Emergency SOS capabilities may prevent lives from being lost.
