Days after Elon Musk completed his latest layoff spree; Twitter, asked online source code host GitHub to remove the Twitter’s source code from its servers.
What Is GitHub?
GitHub.com is an online service used to share software source code between different software developers. GitHub is used by companies, open source organizations, and individuals to share code and make updates over the Internet. The service is a godsend for finding novel ways of writing software and getting help on projects.
What Happened?
A GitHub user calling themselves FreeSpeechEnthusiast posted Twitter’s source code on an open repository, or place to store code, in January. This news comes two days after Elon Musk completed a large round of layoffs. Since Elon Musk took over 75% of the companies 7,500 employees have been let go.
Since noticing the release Twitter filed a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) request to GitHub and the company took the code down. Also, Twitter filed a court order asking forcing GitHub to hand over the, “names, IP addresses, and other details,” of the people who uploaded its source code.
What’s also wild is this news comes days before Twitter was scheduled to open source code used for recommending tweets to users. That plan was supposed to take effect on March 31st.
Mr. Musk’s Wild Ride
To say it hasn’t been turbulent at Twitter since Musk took over would be an understatement. Since his takeover, the Communications Team has been fired and media inquiries receive a poop emoji via email, Musk publicly denounced and violated a disabled employee, and numerous teams have been fired who provide support to the platform and users.
This incident is the latest in a series of moves that question whether or not Elon Musk is a genius or an idiot when it comes to running companies.
